[00:00.56]Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido [00:04.96]returned home to Venezuela on Monday [00:08.52]and urged his supporters to intensify their campaign [00:13.32]to oust President Nicolas Maduro. [00:17.80]Guaido spent the last week traveling outside the country, [00:22.64]having ignored an official ban on foreign travel. [00:27.44]There were concerns that Guaido [00:30.12]might be detained upon his return. [00:33.60]But the 35-year-old said he got through immigration checks [00:38.76]at Venezuela's main airport with no problems. [00:43.80]He was met at the airport by top diplomats [00:48.16]from the United States, Germany, Spain and other countries. [00:55.16]Guaido later spoke to a crowd of demonstrators in Caracas. [01:02.20]He called on his supporters across the country [01:06.00]to fill the streets on Saturday to protest Maduro's hold on power. [01:13.60]Guaido is leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly. [01:20.12]He declared himself interim president of Venezuela on January 23, [01:27.64]two weeks after Maduro began his second six-year term. [01:34.68]Many Venezuelans say the election should not be recognized [01:40.32]because Maduro barred his opponents from running against him. [01:45.84]In the last week, Guaido visited Colombia, [01:50.00]Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Ecuador [01:54.72]-- all countries that support his claim [01:57.80]to be Venezuela's interim president. [02:01.68]Guaido said he hopes his return to Venezuela [02:05.72]will increase pressure on Maduro to resign [02:09.52]so a temporary government can prepare the country [02:13.76]for fair and free elections. [02:17.28]Maduro has said he is the target [02:20.40]of a U.S.-backed plot to overthrow him. [02:24.84]The United States and about 50 other countries [02:29.04]have recognized Guaido as the true leader of Venezuela. [02:34.76]There was no immediate comment Monday [02:37.88]from the Maduro government, which has in the past [02:42.20]jailed and driven into exile other key opposition leaders. [02:48.96]Instead, the Maduro government has been trying [02:52.71]to center the public's attention [02:54.95]on the carnival celebrations going on this week. [02:59.84]On Sunday, Maduro tweeted that Venezuelans nationwide [03:04.88]were enjoying carnival "in peace and happiness." [03:10.12]Among the demonstrators who waited for Guaido [03:14.32]at the Caracas gathering Monday was Wildredo Moya. [03:19.84]He is a 55-year-old former construction worker. [03:24.92]He said Venezuelans hoping for change [03:28.36]should understand it will take time. [03:31.76]"It's a long process," Moya said. [03:35.25]I'm Ashley Thompson.
